Assam Swelters as Temperatures Soar Close to 40°C

Guwahati, May 23, 2025: The northeastern state of Assam is currently experiencing an intense heatwave, with temperatures nearing the 40°C mark in several parts of the region. This unusually high temperature has left both residents and authorities concerned, as the state is typically known for its moderate and humid climate, especially during this time of the year.

Unusual Heat in the Northeast

Assam, often cooled by the mighty Brahmaputra River and surrounded by lush green hills, is not accustomed to such extreme heat. In the past week, districts like Guwahati, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, and Tezpur recorded maximum temperatures ranging from 38°C to 40°C, making it one of the hottest spells the region has faced in recent years.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave alert in multiple districts, advising people to take precautions, stay hydrated, and avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours.

Impact on Daily Life and Agriculture

This intense heat has affected daily life significantly. Markets see fewer crowds during the day, schools have adjusted timings, and health departments have urged people to remain indoors between 12 PM and 4 PM.

Farmers are particularly worried about the impact on their crops. Paddy fields and tea gardens, which are crucial to Assam’s economy, require regular water and moderate temperatures. Continuous high temperatures combined with low pre-monsoon rainfall could affect the quality and yield of these crops.

Climate Change Concerns

Experts believe that such weather events are a clear sign of changing climate patterns in the region. Assam, which usually enjoys tropical monsoon weather, is now witnessing temperature extremes similar to central and northern India. Environmentalists have urged the government to strengthen climate resilience strategies and promote eco-friendly initiatives.

📢 Precautionary Measures for Residents:

  • Drink plenty of water and fluids.

  • Avoid outdoor activities during the afternoon.

  • Wear light, cotton clothing.

  • Use umbrellas or hats if stepping out.

  • Keep homes well-ventilated.

🌧️ Relief Expected Soon?

According to the IMD, scattered thunderstorms and light pre-monsoon showers are expected in a few areas over the next week, which may bring slight relief from the sweltering heat. Until then, residents are advised to stay cautious and take preventive health measures.
